  1. Always balancing what intersects and what is modeled in. Seems best to obey the way things would really be built. Normals or displacements are my current dilema. I also might just go ahead and model in the wooden planks on the deck. Modeling can be this sort of balancing act of when to seperate things and what can be explained through maps and rendering methods...
